Polish Military Acquires 24 Thousand Artillery Rounds for the Krab Howitzers

Mariusz Błaszczak, head of the Polish MoD, announced that two major agreements have been signed covering procurement of ammunition for the Polish military. The contracts have been concluded by and between the MoD and the PGZ Group. Total value of the agreements is said to exceed 800 million zlotys.

Head of the MoD announced, via his Twitter account, that two agreements have been signed. The first one concerns acquisition of 24 thousand 155 mm artillery rounds for the Krab howitzers. The second one covers acquisition of 112.5 million rounds of ammunition for 5.56 and 9 mm firearms. Both agreements have a value exceeding 815 million zlotys in total.

The former agreement was signed by and between the MoD and the Dezamet company based in Nowa Dęba. It concerns ammunition for the Krab sph. The Polish military is to receive 24 thousand rounds as such.

The agreement signed with Dezamet has a total value exceeding 420 million zlotys. It also envisages delivery of 6 thousand special-purpose base-bleed rounds. The delivery is to be finalized in 2022.

Within the framework of the agreement signed, conditions and principles have been set out with regards to continuing the process of establishing domestic manufacturing potential pertaining to the 155 mm artillery rounds. The agreement assumes that the body and the bottom (base) part of the round would be series manufactured with complete rounds being delivered as of 2021. The manufacturer claims that the previously signed agreement concerning the Krab ammunition covered delivery of 11 thousand rounds. The last batch of the aforesaid agreement was delivered over the first quarter of 2019.

The agreement signed now is the most significant contract concerning the NATO artillery rounds as such acquired by the Polish military.

The acquisition is quite significant and it shall cover the needs of the military when it comes to the primary rounds for the new 155 mm howitzers. Two Regina squadron-level fire modules (with 48 howitzers each) are in service now. Another three elements as such are to be received by the military until 2024. Within the framework of the newly adopted modernization plan the MoD is going to continue the procurement.

The second agreement concerns small arms ammunition - 5.56 mm (for the Grot system and for the Beryl rifles) and 9 mm rounds (for the pistols). Here Mesko company based in Skarżysko-Kamienna is the main contractor. The first deliveries are scheduled to happen this year. In total the military would receive 112.5 million rounds of ammunition.
