Poland to Acquire Second Coastal Missile Squadron
Agreement regarding procurement of equipment and armament for the second Polish Coastal Missile Squadron has been signed in Warsaw, in praesentia of Minister of Defence, Tomasz Siemoniak – as the Polish Ministry of Defence informs.
The Agreement covers the issue of procuring the equipment for the second squadron. The basic armament which is to be purchased is the Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile (NSM) system, which uses the missiles which are designed in accordance with the stealth technology guidelines. According to Polish Minister of Defence, Tomasz Siemoniak, capabilities possessed by both squadrons would be enough to protect the Polish coastline along its entire length.
Value of the deal is as much as PLN 800 million. The contract covers delivery of 24 missiles and 23 vehicles, inter alia, radars, command vehicles, transport and logistic vehicles and along with mobile communication centres. Coastal Missile Squadron is to be transformed into a Naval Missile Unit, consisting of 2 squadrons. It will be stationed in Siemrowice, under jurisdiction of the Gdynia 3rd Fleet of Navy Vessels.
Additionally an offset agreement has been negotiated, with a value which is equal to the value of the main contract. Polish companies deliver, among other equipment, radar systems, communication equipment and vehicles. MoD Secretary of State, Czesław Mroczek, stresses the fact that the Ministry of Defence aimed at achieving a significant transfer of technology and capabilities of maintaining the system by own means.
General Sławomir Szczepaniak, head of the Armament Inspectorate, during an earlier conference released information about the negotiations which have been conducted in connection with the Coastal Missile Squadron. The first unit of this type has reached its operational readiness back in June 2013. Besides the NSM missiles, its equipment also consists of Polish-made TRS-15C Odra-C radars, which are being manufactured by the PIT-Radwar company.
