Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova: today, we are talking about security in the European dimension
The Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova, Oleg Serebrian, visited the „Skaner Defence24” studio during 2023 Defence24 DAY conference. The topic of the conversation led by Dr. Jacek Raubo (Defence24) was the security issues of Moldova itself and the region from the perspective of Russian military actions against Ukraine and attempts to destabilize other countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Serebrian emphasized that it is important to remember his country’s long border with Ukraine, where a war has been going on since February 2022. Moreover, the Russians still have a military contingent in Transnistria, a de facto territory controlled by the Kremlin. Russian regional military presence and the issue of economic ties with Ukraine mean that, from the Moldovan perspective, the ongoing aggression against Ukraine directly affects the state’s security. It should also be noted that over 70,000 people, Ukrainian war refugees, went to Moldova.

Oleg Serebrian was also asked about the issues of Transnistria mentioned above and noted that there is no chance for talks with Russia about this area under current conditions. In his opinion, Russia must normalize its relations with Ukraine to be able to talk about returning to negotiations in the 5+2 format. Therefore, we must wait for the end of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Still, at the same time, there are several possibilities for relations with the separatist authorities in Tiraspol in 1+1 formats with the support of the OSCE.
