Kosiniak-Kamysz: Europe Needs to Take Care of Its Security
Europe needs to take care of its security, said Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy PM and head of the Polish Ministry of Defence, commenting on the statement made by the leader of the European People’s Party on the necessity of establishing European deterrence potential, including nuclear weapons.
“Europe needs to take care of its security, in line with the actions undertaken by NATO”, said Kosiniak-Kamysz. “I am a proponent of the EU increasing its involvement in the security matters, defence industry, compared to what has been happening previously”, he added, stating that this is a “key, fundamental matter”, alongside the European and Polish support for Ukraine.
He also referred to his meeting with Thierry Bretton the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, dealing with defence. Bretton outlined a very important initiative pertaining to the defence industry, also when it comes to European-level financing for that sector.

“Weber also mentions even deeper integration, when it comes to action undertaken for security. I am always satisfied, hearing all voices tied to elevating the level of Polish, European, and NATO security”, Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
The Minister of Defence said that following PM Tusk’s visit to Kyiv, a new beginning has been created in the Polish-Ukrainian relations. However, he also said that a broader EU involvement is needed in the support for Ukraine.

Manfred Weber (CSU), speaking to Politico, expressed a belief that Europe needs to establish defence and deterrence capabilities of its own, to be able to act without the US support. He said that NATO is welcome, but Europe needs to be strong so that it can defend itself without the alliance, or when Trump is in power, referring to the US election, and statements made by Trump suggesting that he would detach the US from NATO and declaring that should Europe be under attack, the US will not help.
Weber claimed that regardless of the results of the election in the US, Europe needs to be able to work alone in the field of foreign and security policies. He said that Europe also needs to establish proper deterrence and defence capabilities, warning everybody that the nuclear scenario may be a decisive one. Politico recalls that US warheads stored in six bases in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, and Italy constitute the backbone of NATO’s nuclear deterrence scheme.
