The Russian formation was one of the largest groups of aircraft intercepted within the scope of the Baltic Air Policing initiative. The Russians were intercepted by the British Eurofighter Typhoon jets from the RAF’s 6th Squadron. The intercepted group of aircraft executed a sortie along the borders of the Baltic states, with their transponders turned off, without any radio contact. The incident took place on 24th of July.

Activity of the Russian Air Force is not being decreased. On 29th July, Baltic Air Policing fighters intercepted 11 Russian aircraft – three An-26 Curl and one Il-76 Candid transport aircraft, four MiG-31 Foxhound fighters and four Su-24 Fencer bombers. Starting from May, the British fighters stationed at the Amari airbase were scrambled 18 times in order to intercept “unidentified intruders” - usually the Russian Air Force aircraft, flying with their transponders switched off.
